Profile of a Small Munsterlander The Small Munsterlander is the "youngest" of the continental breeds in the process of becoming a part of the North American hunting scene. The Small Munsterlander belongs to the versatile hunting breeds which includes the following: Brittany Spaniels, German Longhaired Pointers, German Shorthaired Pointers, German Wirehaired Pointers, Large Munsterlanders, Pudelpointers, Spinonis, Vizslas, Weimaraners, and Wirehaired Pointing Griffons. The Small Munsterlander is an all-purpose gun dog, which is a verbatum translation of the German "all Gebrauchhund." Europeans set a high standard for the Small Munsterlander and the dogs perform superbly in their native land. A century of progressive development with this age-old breed (dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries) is available to all who seek it. Yet, proven Small Munsterlanders are relatively rare in North America. On this side of the Atlantic, the breed is protected by The Small Munsterlander Club of North America (SMCNA). The club was established by the Jensens in 1993 and already boasts of more than 500 members. The Small Munsterlanders are also recognized by NAVHDA. |
